Day 2 - Neda to Pontedeume
I slept like a log last night, which was a huge relief after the previous night. I woke a few moments before my phone alarm went off at 6am, and started getting my main case ready. Showered and dressed, I was downstairs to leave my case for collection and have my breakfast. It was a good spread, they even had one of those machines that squeezes oranges to make the best fresh juice. I had scrambled eggs, meats and cheeses with bread, and a couple of really strong coffees.
I remembered to get a stamp in my Credencial and then I was away at about 08:40. The estuary looked lovely in the morning light.
It was a pretty brutal climb up to the Camino route, but then the walk settled into mostly rolling hills, small villages and woodland. There were fabulous views over the estuary from time to time, making it a fabulous walk. At the first town I needed a comfort break so grabbed a coffee in a nice modern bar with clean facilities. That gave me today's second stamp so there was no need to stop again.
Along the way, I happened upon Jevon and Fiona who had leapfrogged me at some point. We walked together for a while, until we came to a display of scallop shells outside a small farm. I wanted to buy one, so they went on. I made my choice, and I think I was guided to the right one. It was the one hanging backwards in the middle, and when I turned it I knew it was for me. I made a donation and carried on.
A few hundred metres later, I was thinking about Betty. I looked to my left and saw this delightful woodland scene. It was an emotional moment, it looked so perfect with the wild flowers and the trees.
I caught up with Jevon and Fiona in Cabanas at a cross. We chatted a while and they headed off to find their hotel in Pontedeume. I finished eating my apple and headed across the river too. The medieval bridge is delightful, and still in use for traffic.
My hotel is located a few hundred metres into the town, just below the main church. I was met by Beatriz, who had been sending me information by WhatsApp since yesterday. The hotel doesn't have catering, so I have been given cards valid for dinner tonight and breakfast tomorrow. Opus is very happy with our light and airy room.
I wandered around looking for lunch, and got some wonderful battered cod pieces with garlic mayo and a beer. Then, feeling in need of some sugar I got a waffle and a coffee in a dessert café.
I'll drop a few more photos below and that's it for today. Back on the road tomorrow.
Buen Camino.
